By Steve Ardagh-Walter, Conservative Councillor & portfolio holder for the environment at West Berkshire Council.
Did you know we recycle about half of all our waste in West Berkshire, and that puts us in the top third of councils in the country? We can of course do more, and I’m pleased to tell you that we are rolling out a separate weekly food waste collection service from the end of October.
It’s simple and it won’t cost you a penny. You should have received a small and secure food waste caddy, and collection will take place on the same day as your black bin and recycling collections. You’ll be able to recycle: meat and fish; fruit and vegetables; cheese and eggs; bread and pastries; uneaten food from plates; tea bags and coffee grounds.
This scheme will help us, make West Berkshire even greener, and it will save us money too by reducing waste trips to outside the district. The food waste we collect from residents will be taken to our composter in Padworth, where it will be turned into soil conditioner for use by local farmers and landscapers.
