Richard Benyon has used his weekly blog to champion a right of recall of Members of Parliament in the most serious of circumstances.
Richard said, “I strongly believe that we have one of the cleanest and least corrupt systems of almost any democracy. However, I find it disappointing when 649 of us can be besmirched by one wrongdoer.”
He continued, “The electorate can hold politicians to account at least once every five years, but in certain cases this is insufficient. With the right sort of safeguards, recall makes it possible to petition an MP who has lost the trust of his or her electorate to submit themselves to a by-election. I hope we see this provision in the Queen's Speech, so that it can become law before the next election.
