COP26, the UN climate change conference scheduled for November 2020, will be a vital summit, marking both the full adoption of the Paris Treaty and the date by which countries are expected to come forward with clear plans on what they are doing to stop climate change. It will set tougher targets for the following decade and, crucially, it will come just after the US Presidential election. Along with other members of the Conservative Environment Network, Richard is urging as many people as possible to lend their support to a petition to Parliament supporting the UK’s bid to host this vital event.
‘The UK’s leadership on climate change is respected around the world and we want to leverage this to build on the Paris accord. COP26 will be a crucial step in this campaign. We need to show the world how strongly the UK feels about this issue and how many people support holding the conference here.
‘There is no age limit on who can sign and this is not a party political campaign. It is much much bigger than that so please do encourage your family and friends, your local school, your workplace colleagues to sign up. You’ll find the petition on my website: www.richardbenyon.com and responses need to be in by 17 June latest.’
