Following the horrific accidents this summer on the A34 in West Berkshire, Richard Benyon met with neighbouring MPs, Ed Vaizey, MP for Didcot and Wantage, and Nicola Blackwood, MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, yesterday to coordinate their campaign for urgent action to improve safety on this stretch of road.
All three MPs are committed to campaigning for improvements on the A34 which runs through their three constituencies. They agreed on a joint approach to lobby Roads Minister, John Hayes, and will be pushing for a meeting with him and local stakeholders as soon as possible.
Richard commented, ‘This is a vital north-south link, passing through our three constituencies, which is used by hundreds of vehicles every day. The issue of safety has been ignored for too long and we are pressing for all the relevant authorities to step up and take responsibility for making the necessary improvements as soon as possible.’
Richard has been liaising with the A34 Action Group, set up by concerned residents, and all three MPs will be meeting with this group next month. He is also working closely with West Berkshire Council and the local parish councils and has written to the Minister and to Highways England. ‘None of us is expert in this field but we need those who are to come up with a strategy – urgently.’
