Speeding is sadly a big issue for us in Lambourn, especially coming down the hill from the B4000 into our village. We were there recently making a short community film to highlight the issue, (you can have a look below), and we saw numerous cars and lorries passing us, some going way too fast.
This road, in particular, is very narrow. It has no pavement on one side, and some of the houses come straight down the steps onto the road, putting residents at risk from passing traffic.
We of course have speed limits in place for a reason. They are there to protect everyone, but sadly there is a minority breaking them.
So, what are we doing about it? First, we’re entitled to put in a bid for up to £3,000 which has to be match-funded by the parish council or a relevant charity, and we’ve done just that — bidding for speed cameras and signs.
Next, we are implementing a nationwide scheme called Speedwatch. In this community initiative, residents stand out come rain or shine, and observe traffic speed. If they see a speeding vehicle, they take note of the make, model and registration and share it onto the DVLA. The owner of that vehicle is then sent a cautionary letter.
We must reduce speeding in Lambourn. It is a small village, with a small high street, and we all have a part to play in keeping it safe.
